[Picture: Background: 6 piece pie style color split with pink and blue alternating. Foreground: White girl wearing a green t-shirt, featuring African-American Sesame Street Muppets with nine different hairstyles, subtitled, “I Love My Hair.” Has a smug, arrogant facial expression and plays with her long, brown hair. Top text: “Pointing out that my crappy choices mean harsh consequences for others?” Bottom text: “You’re just another holier-than-thou [vegan, or insert pretty much any other rights activist here, really].”]
Know why? Because your trivial preferences are not worth more than the dignity and lives of other individuals. No, really – they’re not. I know that in this anthropocentric world we live in, humans are viewed as some sort of fucking deity to be worshiped at any cost, and you may think the world revolves around YOU, and that life is all about YOU, but it’s not. You are obviously steamed because I called you out on your human privilege. Yes. That’s right. Human privilege. And really, that’s just too fucking bad. Get over it.
Wanna know why it is necessary to call people out on their human privilege? Why it is necessary to laugh in the face of speciesism and present it as the ridiculous shit that it is? Because BILLIONS of animals – that is, 50+ BILLION sentient beings – are used as expendable objects all over the world, every year, because of one thing: they are not human. Because of this simple, irrelevant fact, they are automatically deemed “less than.” And that mentality is exercised EVERY TIME someone decides that, “Oh, I just couldn’t live without cheese!” or “Wow, this dolphin show is so exciting!” or “I’ve just gotta get me a pair of those gorgeous, leather boots!” Notice the pattern here? When it’s not I this or I that, it’s ME, ME, ME.
Guess what? Humans are NOT the only species on the planet. And while atrocities against fellow human beings no doubt exist to this day, and must continue to be fought, violations against nonhuman animals deserve to be fought with no less vigor. Want to tell me that not everyone can go vegan, that some people are at a point in their lives where they are incapable of taking care of themselves, or are living with food insecurity? I am well aware of that. And this message is not for them. But for those – and I’m talking about many people – who, for petty and selfish reasons, refuse to stop participating in animal exploitation, who are making a conscious CHOICE to contribute to mass violence amid an abundance of vegan alternatives, there is simply NO. EXCUSE. WHATSOEVER.
And if taking a stand against oppression, whether it be against human or nonhuman beings, makes me sound “holier-than-thou,” then so be it. I’d rather be a holier-than-thou queer activist, a holier-than-thou feminist, and a holier-than-thou vegan, than a holier-than-thou human who truly believes that humans are entitled to supremacy over other animals.

Because fictional depictions of violence are far worse than, you know…ACTUAL violence.
